Marrakech: a colourful imperial city at the foot of the Atlas MountainsMarrakech is one of Morocco's four historic imperial cities and immediately immerses you in a world of culture, history and atmosphere. Wander through the old medina, a maze of narrow streets, authentic shops and fragrant souks. At the heart of this historic district lies the world-famous Djemaa el Fna square, which constantly changes character throughout the day. In the surrounding souks, you can spend hours browsing countless stalls filled with spices, handcrafted ceramics, leather goods and colourful lanterns. Looking for something a little more modern? Outside the city walls lies the Gueliz district. This modern part of Marrakech offers a striking contrast to the centuries-old medina, with elegant boutiques, trendy coffee shops and luxurious restaurants. |

Historic MarrakechMarrakech was founded by the Almoravids in the 11th century and was one of the region's most important political and cultural centres for many years. Its rich history can still be seen today in the city's magnificent palaces, lush gardens and traditional architecture. The city's best-known landmark is the Koutoubia Mosque, whose impressive minaret can be seen from almost anywhere in Marrakech. The Bahia Palace is also highly recommended. Its richly decorated rooms and beautifully tiled courtyards offer a wonderful insight into traditional Moroccan architecture. It is therefore no surprise that the historic medina has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Climate in MarrakechMarrakech has a warm and relatively dry climate. Be aware that summers can become extremely hot. Spring and autumn are therefore among the most popular seasons for a city break, offering pleasantly warm temperatures for exploring the city. Marrakech is also a popular destination during winter. The days are often sunny and pleasant, but temperatures can drop considerably during the evening and at night. Things to do in MarrakechThere is plenty to discover in Marrakech. Start your journey through the medina and immerse yourself in the scents of fresh spices and the vibrant colours of the textile souks. An evening at Djemaa el Fna is also an unforgettable experience. As the sun sets, the square fills with musicians, storytellers and dozens of atmospheric food stalls where you can enjoy delicious local dishes. For culture lovers, the Saadian Tombs and lush gardens, such as the famous Jardin Majorelle, offer a welcome oasis of tranquillity away from the energy of the city. Have more time? Marrakech is an excellent base from which to explore the spectacular surrounding area. From the city, you can easily book beautiful excursions to the valleys of the impressive Atlas Mountains. |
