Fez, the oldest imperial city of Morocco

Fez, also known as one of the four imperial cities, together with Marrakesh, Meknes, and Rabat. In addition, Fez is the second largest city in Morocco and a popular city trip destination. The city is divided into Fez el Bali (the old city) and Fez Jdid (the new city).

Fez el Bali

The old city, also known as Fez el Bali, is full of surprises, and the old medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. It has no fewer than approximately 9,000 streets and alleys, making it easy to get lost. It is useful to keep in mind the two main streets: Talaa Sghira and Talaa Kebira. These two streets are wider and busier than the many narrow alleys.

In the maze of streets, there is always something beautiful to see, from colorful markets and beautiful fountains to bathhouses, mosques, Quranic schools, tanneries, museums, and restaurants.

Fez Jdid

The newer part of the city, also known as Fez Jdid, is mainly known for the Royal Palace “Dar el-Makhzen” located here. This used to be the main residence of the sultan and is still used by the King of Morocco when he visits Fez. It is therefore not possible to visit the inside, but the palace walls alone are well worth a visit.

Things to do in Fez

Visit the old medina and don’t miss the ‘front gate’ of the medina: Bab Bou Jeloud. A gigantic gate that provides access to the old medina. Around the gate, you will find many shops and restaurants.

Marinid Tombs, a beautiful viewpoint over Fez, located about a 30-minute walk from Bab Bou Jeloud. Watching the sunset from here is highly recommended!

Health

Healthcare in Moroccan cities is reasonable to good. There are often private clinics where good care is provided at high costs. Larger hotels often have a doctor available, where travelers can go during opening hours. Outside major cities, medical facilities are often very limited.

Passport and visa

To travel to Fez, you need a valid passport that is still valid for at least 3 months upon departure from Morocco.

During winter time, there is no time difference with Morocco.
During summer time, Morocco is 1 hour behind the Netherlands.
